For the week of May 5th - May 12th
Diluted - Teacher OR Messiah
Scripture This Week:

Matthew 16:13-19 (NIV)

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter,[b] and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades[c] will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be[d] bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be[e] loosed in heaven.”

Main Thought This Week:
This week’s message considers the idea that we are prone to make Jesus a moral or ethical guide for our lives, rather than letting the reality of His Messiahship shape our relationship with Him and how we grow in spiritual maturity.

Discussion Questions:
1. If someone were to approach you out of the blue and ask you "Who is Jesus?", how would you describe Him? What characteristics or personality traits first come to mind?
2. Do you resonate with the idea of seeing Christ as a moral or ethical teacher or guide and how has that affected how you understand Biblical ideas like obedience or serving God?
3. Casey spoke on the idea that we often review our deeds of service to God (or lack of) to determine how close we are with God. Are there any particular guides you use to determine how well your relationship with God is going?
4. Are there ways this week that you would like to see the Holy Spirit take power in your life to disciple you into who you were made to be, rather than trying harder and believing that your efforts could get you there?
