The Art of Neighboring - “I Need Help”

Scripture This Week:
Matthew 28:16-20
16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
John 16:7-8
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.”

Main idea:
The last sermon in our “The Art of Neighboring” series reflects on the reality that without the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, we cannot love our neighbor as we have been called to. Without the Holy Spirit, who Jesus calls “The Helper”, we are helpless. But the same power that enabled Christ to live as He did and empowered Jesus’ first followers to walk out their faith is available for us today to use to impact the world around us.

Discussion Questions:

1. What part has the Holy Spirit played in your spiritual formation or faith background?

2. If the Bible is clear about the necessity of the Holy Spirit to live out our faith, why do so many Christians live without acknowledging or accessing the Holy Spirit?

3. The Holy Spirit is referred to as “The Helper” in the book of John, why is it so crucial that humanity would have a helper?

4. In what ways are you hoping for the Holy Spirit to empower you throughout your life that you know you can’t do without Him?
