Build on the Rock: What Jesus Taught about Living Through Life’s Storms

“Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock…” – Matthew 7:24

This summer at Grace City, we spent 12 weeks walking through Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. Week after week, we sat under His words, discovering what life in His upside-down kingdom really looks like. And now, as Jesus closes His sermon in Matthew 7, He leaves us not with a blessing or a prayer—but with a decision.

He tells a story. Two builders. Two homes. One storm. Only one home still standing.

From the outside, the houses looked the same. But beneath the surface, their foundations couldn’t have been more different. One was anchored to the rock. The other was built on sand. And when the storm came, the foundation told the truth.

The Foundation Test

Here’s the reality: Jesus never promises us a storm-free life. But He does promise us a storm-proof one—if our lives are built on Him.

Storms don’t create collapse; they reveal it. They expose the cracks we’d rather keep hidden:

  • Control we dressed up as “wisdom”

  • Fear we excused

  • Anger we justified

  • Comfort we clung to

A storm doesn’t lie. It shows us what we’ve really been standing on.

The Only Foundation That Holds

We live in a culture full of counterfeit foundations. Hustle. Success. Image. Comfort. Security. Each promises stability—but none can withstand life’s storms.

Only Jesus is strong enough to hold.
But here’s the key: building on Him isn’t just hearing His words or admiring His teaching. It’s putting them into practice.

Jesus doesn’t need more fans. He’s forming disciples. And disciples aren’t storm-free people—they’re storm-proof people.

Grace in the Rubble

Maybe you’re realizing you’ve built on the wrong foundation. Maybe the storm already revealed cracks you didn’t know were there.

Here’s the good news: grace meets us in the rubble. Jesus doesn’t shame us for shaky foundations—He invites us to rebuild on Him.

It’s not too late. It’s never too late. With Him as your foundation, you can weather every storm.

How Do You Build Your Life on Jesus?

Jesus said it Himself: “Everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.” (Matthew 7:24)

A storm-proof life isn’t about knowing more—it’s about living what you already know. Here are a few simple ways to build on the Rock:

  • Prayer – not just asking for things, but walking with God daily.

  • Scripture – letting His words shape how you see reality.

  • Community – surrounding yourself with people who point you back to Him.

  • Obedience – saying “yes” to Jesus even when it’s costly.

These aren’t quick fixes. They’re steady, daily choices that anchor you deeper into Him.

A Question for You

So here’s the question: What are you building your life on?

Because when the storms come—and they will—your foundation will speak louder than your intentions.

If your answer isn’t Jesus, let Him be your foundation. With Him, your life can be storm-proof.
